چکیده

Semantic theories of natural language associate meanings with utterances by providing meanings for lexical items and rules for determining the meaning of larger units given the meanings of their parts. Traditionally, meanings are combined via function composition, which works well when constituent structure trees are used to guide semantic composition. More recently, the functional structure of LFG has been used to provide the syntactic information necessary for constraining derivations of meaning in a crosslinguistically uniform format. It has been difficult, however, to reconcile this approach with the combination of meanings by function composition. In contrast to compositional approaches, we present a deductive approach to assembling meanings, based on reasoning with constraints, which meshes well with the unordered nature of information in the functional structure. Our use of linear logic as a ‘glue’ for assembling meanings also allows for a coherent treatment of modification as well as of the LFG requirements of completeness and coherence.

Input and Glue in OT-LFG

In glue logic (Dalrymple 1999, 2001, Asudeh 2004), LFG has found a reasonably stable but developing method for connecting syntactic structures to formal semantic intepretation. However current formulations of glue logic make the rather unsatisfactory move of divorcing grammatical features from any intrinsic connection with what are usually regarded as their meanings. Rather than directly connec...

Features as Resources in R-LFG

This paper describes a new formalization of Lexical-Functional Grammar called R-LFG (where the “R” stands for “Resource-based”). The formal details of R-LFG are presented in Johnson (1997); the present work concentrates on motivating R-LFG and explaining to linguists how it differs from the “classical” LFG framework presented in Kaplan and Bresnan (1982). This work is largely a reaction to the ...

Developing German Semantics on the basis of Parallel LFG Grammars

This paper reports on the development of a core semantics for German which was implemented on the basis of an English semantics that converts LFG f-structures to flat meaning representations in a Neo-Davidsonian style. Thanks to the parallel design of the broad-coverage LFG grammars written in the context of the ParGram project (Butt et al., 2002) and the general surface independence of LFG f-s...

Information Spreading and Levels of Representation in LFG

A basic tenet of generative grammar is the existence of a distinction between the phonetic realization of utterances, concretely represented in terms of form, order and arrangement, and more abstract structures that play a central role in the formulation of syntactic constraints and the extraction of meaning. `Classic' LFG (the theory and approach of the papers in Bresnan 1982) focused on two l...

Corpus-Based Induction Of An LFG Syntax-Semantics Interface For Frame Semantic Processing

We present a method for corpus-based induction of an LFG syntax-semantics interface for frame semantic processing in a computational LFG parsing architecture. We show how to model frame semantic annotations in an LFG projection architecture, including special phenomena that involve non-isomorphic mappings between levels. Frame semantic annotations are ported from a manually annotated corpus to ...
